Time is passing

It has been nearly two years since my uncle's death and it still stings...

On Saturday, we had our second annual memorial cookout in his honor. It was a joyous event filled with food, family and love.

It was wonderful to see and hang out with folks I don't see or hear from throughout the year. Everyone is wrapped up in their schedules. I am grateful for a time when we can all get together and enjoy one another's presence. I've seen friends that I have not seen in many moons. That elt really good.

I am hoping everyone else had an amazing weekend as well!

Enjoy this beautiful week ahead!

Independence Day

What an amazing weekend!

Philly is the birthplace of freedom and liberty. The Declaration of Independence was signed in Old City. It was the beginning of us, as a people, having rights and separating ourselves from British rule.

Of course, this did not apply to all, but that is to come, much later.

I feel blessed to have freedoms. I realize, much more is to change, but much has been accomplished.

Happy Independence Day friends!

I was under the impression that when school was out I would have lots of free time. I now know that to be an untruth. I think I just realized how much I cram into my days on a regular and now I have more time to get it all done. LOL!

Happy Memorial Day!

I won't pretend to wanna make a big deal out of today. For my own personal reasons, this day brings me a great sense of loss. My two grandfathers and uncle were all veterans and as much as I appreciate what they've done to protect this country, I still miss them all dearly.

I'd like to send a prayer up to each of them and hope they are in a happier place.

Love you all!

I survived!

If you are reading this, it is apparent you have survived "The Rapture" that never occurred.
May 21, 2011 was the official date of the Rapture, according to Biblical scholar and Christian Radio broadcaster, Harold Camping.

So many times these things are predicted to come and we prepare for the end of days. But what happens when the day comes and goes? Are we disappointed because we put so much effort into preparing for the afterlife? Should we just be grateful and move forward until the next rapture prediction?

I, for one, am glad this non-event has come to pass.

Maybe Rad Dudes got it right.
The day was saved, thanks to Macho Man Randy Savage!

A few tips...

People have been asking for tips on getting in shape. I have a routine I do every year. I start around April to get myself in shape in time for June. The first few days are always the hardest but my motivation keeps me going.

Here are a few tips I learned:

1. Talking more = eating less.
It's good to talk during meals because the more you talk, the less you are eating.

2. Just stop.
It is said that it takes 20 minutes for the body to realize it's full. If you take in lesser portions, you will not overeat. Simple, right?

3. Breakfast.
The most important meal of the day is breakfast. Missing breakfast can cause a slow down in the metabolism, causing the body to slow down the break down of fat which keeps us fat.

4. Weight lifting.
Weight lifting is a great way to burn fat. It burns through the sugar source which is necessary before the body can burn fat.

5. Watch what you eat.
It sounds simple. Stick to the basic food groups. Snacks are difficult to give up but you can at least try eating healthy snacks and do so in moderation. We all know which foods aren't good for us so try cutting them out.

I try to keep it simple. One more thing I have been doing lately is eating fruit after working out. In the past, I would just bathe and crash. My energy would be extremely low and I hated working out. Since snacking on fruit after gives me a little energy boost, it has been beneficial to me.

I hope these little tips are helpful.

Have an amazing week!

How u doing?

I am now one week into my "better health" plan and everything is fine so far. I have been working out and eating more fruits and vegetables. I notice, I am less sluggish throughout my day already.

I plan to incorporate more walking as well. During harsh Winter months, I definitely do not get in enough walking.

On Saturday, we took a family walk at a local haunt. It was a lot of fun and great exercise for the kids and myself.

Eventually, I may begin using the Wii again for further assistance in attaining my get fit goal.

That is how things are going for me, as of yet.
I am hoping everyone is well and wishing you all a wonderful week!

One day without shoes

I know I am late with this as the day is nearly done but I wanted to share the occasion. Today Tom's Shoes is calling on us to raise awareness for the millions around the world who may never own or wear a pair of shoes.

At this point in the eve, you and I can help by tweeting the hashtag #withoutshoes or post a photo of your bare feet to Facebook and ask others to do the same.

Remember, going without shoes puts those who do so at risk for disease and infection.

With every pair of shoes purchased from Tom's Shoes, a pair of new shoes is donated to a child in need.

Let's all do what we can to help.

It's my baby's birthday!

Today is my sweetness's birthday! I am excited! He has been with us for nearly two years now and brightens my every day.

It's funny, as a kid, I never wanted a pet. As a mother, I was hoping my kids would feel the same. LOL! I was wrong but I am okay with it. Over time, they did a lot of research and learned as much as they could about cats.

When we decided to adopt, we visited our local animal shelter online and checked out what they had to offer. Never in my life did I think we would choose the cat we chose. I was hoping to get a kitten but came to realize my kids were much to mellow for one.

Our little guy is four years old today and we could not be more happy that he chose us.

Here he is in his new birthday cat tree:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Lord Orochimaru-sama (The name I want to change his to but no one will agree)

Monday...

This weekend and month flew by much too quickly. April will be here Friday and I am feeling unprepared. I have paperwork to catch up on and so much that has yet to be done. I'm going to buckle down and focus to get everything complete but it may not be on time. L.O.L. I'm such a procrastinator.

Back to my so called hectic life, this unsteady flow of things should be coming to a halt by week's end. I am so happy to see this month end. It has been wreaking havoc on everything good and sane in me.

Here I am complaining when I came to wish everyone a lovely week.

Manic Monday

It's another Manic Monday. I have a very busy week ahead, yet again. I should say, this has been a very hectic month. I am hoping everyone else's days have been more exciting and prosperous than mine. I just want some sanity as my light at the end of the tunnel. LOL.

Sending more well wishes to the people of Japan.

This whole Fukushima 50 ordeal has such implications on the families involved. A group of 50 retired and middle aged power plant workers have gone into the plant to try to stop the leaks. They chose to do so because they have already lived their lives and want the younger workers, who have not yet had families or have young families to have the opportunity to live on. I think it's very noble of those who essentially, are giving their lives so that the younger generation will be spared. It is also sorrowful to think of the families they may be leaving behind.

It seems in some instances, everyone suffers.

All I can do from where I sit is pray and hope for the least amount of damage. I also hope that these honorable men do not suffer in vain.

Have a great week friends.

I'm not one to toot my own horn but...

...Fabulous Savings asked, "what makes me fabulous?"

I can go on for days about the many things (as I am told) that make me fabulous but I like to keep things simple. In one word, my dedication. My love for my family is the reason I left my job of 14 years. I wanted to offer my children bigger and better opportunities in this life. I am a proud homeschooling parent of three. I left everything I knew and loved behind for my lovely ladies. My dedication to seeing them become intelligent, independent women that not only I can be proud of but who will have pride in themselves, is what I see as my greatest and most fabulous trait!

My only enemy...

...is inside of me. I live by those words. I am constantly demanding myself to be better. I strive to be a better me, in any way that I can.

I am definitely not a resolution type of person but I am challenging myself once again to give up sodas. In a effort to do so, I have committed myself to a rule. The next time I have a carbonated drink, it has to be made in a Soda Stream

I very obviously don't own one as of yet. So what does this mean for me? Well, I am challenging myself to either win or find a way to afford this wonderful system.

I know, I set myself up for possible failure but, I have to find a way to make it work. I am not allowing myself to ask anyone to purchase it for me, or receive it as a gift. This is totally on me.

I am putting the pressure on and I am up for this! We will see how it all works out.

Wish me luck! I'll keep you all updated!

I've been excitedly saving up Amazon dollars in hopes of treating myself to a Soda Stream! If you've not heard of this wonderful device, you are living under a rock, under a rock.

All who know me understand I have a serious soda addiction that I have been trying to kick for a few years now. Well, the Soda Stream allows you to make healthier sparkling water and sodas as an alternative for people like me. I also love that this is a truly "green" machine because it uses no batteries or electricity.

In my quest to earn one, I've also been entering many contests in hopes of winning this device. Lo and behold, I find New Age Mama is giving away a Soda Stream! How awesome is that? Flashback Friday 2/11/11

As time wore on, I became more frustrated with the lack of African American education in school. I had many conversations with my uncle concerning black inventors and important historical figures we were not learning about. It's sad how much is lost and even now, not being taught to the youth.

Then, this guy dropped the jewels of knowledge and I was blown away. I found myself quoting it in class and getting into plenty of trouble for it. I wasn't trying to show off, I just wanted to share what I learned with others.

How can we ever truly know one another without knowing of all of our history?

Frugal Valentine Day ideas (for family)

I like to do something special for the children but this year my funds are extremely tight. Usually, I go to the dollar store and grab some cute supplies to make baskets. Our local dollar store has an amazing selection of candied treats, cards and baskets to choose from but this year, I want to do something different.

I decided I will compile a list of fun free or cheap things I can do for V day. Feel free to add to the list if you please.

1. E-cards. This is the easiest idea by far. I send them for birthdays, holidays and just because.

2. Special meals. I cook a feast consisting of favorite foods my children enjoy.

3. Cakes, cookies, pies. This one is self-explanatory. I make and decorate special treats for the family to enjoy.

4. Movie night! I recently won a year of free blu-ray rentals. I am thinking everyone can pick a favorite movie and we can enjoy a wonderful movie night together.

5. Homemade cards. I still enjoy receiving these from the kids. I love to see their drawings and creativity. It's also a fun activity to do as a family.

6. Homemade tees. My good friend iwearyourshirt sent me a box of Simply Screen Stencils left over from a day of advertising. They're inexpensive and easy-to-find in most craft shops. The stencils can be used on shirts, sneakers, bags, etc.

7. Books! People underestimate the power of books. My children enjoy reading and if they didn't, they would be forced to pretend they do anyway. LOL. I enjoy finding age appropriate books in the bargain section of my favorite bookstore or iBooks for my little ladies. Sharing a love of reading is sharing love.

8. Homemade truffles. This one I have been planning to do with my kids for a while. There are a ton of inexpensive recipes using ingredients most of us have just lying around. My girls and I are excited to try one!

9. Take suggestions. I like to ask my girls for input. Sometimes kids have the most wonderfully, cheap ideas. LOL!

10. I'm willing to take suggestions. Share your ideas on inexpensive things you enjoy with your family.

In my youth, we didn't learn much about the history of my ancestors. We were taught about slavery but not much was mentioned of Africa except to say it was the land from where the slaves were stolen. I always wondered if that was is there was to know.

I know you're thinking, what does this have to do with music or Hip Hop. It's funny, the first things I learned of Africa came from rap music. This next video is the beginning of my learning about my people and it sparked my need to learn much more.

I've been thinking back on when I met my first love. I can't say that I remember the particular day or even the individual but I can remember the time and how I felt.

I was filled with excitement, music was in the air and I was loving it. I was a young girl filled with big dreams. I just wanted to know everything there was to know.

As time wore on my love grew stronger. But there is one moment that stands out in my mind. It was when I heard her voice. She gave me a new sense of joy. It was not because she was the first, but she was only 14 when I heard her. I was a little younger but, I thought it was the coolest thing to hear a girl rock the mic. I bought the record and wore it out. This lady is one of my idols!

Some things never change. Hip hop will always be my first love.

I've been hearing for the past few days there is a tampon shortage from New York to Philadelphia. My first reaction is to giggle like a school kid. It seems to be a serious matter though, as some women are paying up to $100 for a box.

Apparently there was a disruption of production this past Fall at O.B. I am hoping this is resolved but also hope women know these products are available online. $100 is a bit ridiculous for tampons, IMO.

This was just too weird and funny not to share. Any thoughts?

Stripped of my nature? WHY?

I'm not sure how I feel about this whole new zodiac sign phenomenon. I understand astronomers have known this for generations and it has everything to do with the Earth's position in relation to the sun. So be it. I'm not be on horoscopes but I am a believer in astrology and how it affects personality and human traits.

So what does this mean for me. My birthday is December 28th and I have been proud to say I'm a Capricorn...until now. In the past few days, it's been revealed that I am now a Sagittarius. I am wondering if that means I should expect changes in my personality. I've been told it will be a gradual change and it may affect later generations, many years from now,

What does everyone else think? Where do you fit in? Has your zodiac sign changed?

Oh, what now?

There are so many things I wanted to tackle today. I wanted to share my thoughts but I can't seem to get them straight.
In the forefront of my mind is the negativity going on over Twitter parties. I stopped attending them some time ago. I began participating again during the holiday season in hopes of winning some holiday prizes and gifts for the family. I've come to see there are many people who are tripping over not winning.
I know I've said before, we just can't win them all but when adults begin to throw tantrums like children, call others cheaters and accuse party hostesses of favoritism with NO proof, things are just getting ridiculous. It makes me not want to enter.
I was accused of cheating more than once, always by strangers. People who are upset that I won a prize they felt they deserved so I know exactly how it feels to be accused. I admit, I have little faith in random.org and feel leery about a few hostesses but that just means, without proof, the best thing I can do is avoid those parties.
Which leads me back to the accusations. They are hurtful and usually unfounded. Anyone who tweets contests knows there is always someone copying your tweets, whether we realize it or not. So saying all of these accounts have the same tweets does not mean I own all of them. It only means, people see me as someone who knows where to find the best contest :P
I know I'm babbling. I'm very tired from it all. I don't like to see friends wrongfully accused. Nor do I like to accuse anyone of anything I can't prove. All of the negativity must cease.
Can't we all just get along?

Wordless Wednesday

By far, this is one of my favorite wins. I will be deeply saddened when the shipments come to an end.

You win some, you lose some...

I find myself thinking back, wondering when I realized that losses outweigh wins. Take that as you want. In my year of entering contests, I have lost many more than I've won and no matter what anyone thinks, I'm all right with that.

I understand. I cannot win them all. That is okay.

Of course, there are times when I really wanted to win and I don't. It gets me down for about sixty seconds and I am over it. If I spent my time dwelling on all of my losses, I would never be happy.

I am learning to apply that to other areas of my life. Things will not always be great. I've seen enough "losses" to keep me under but I pick myself up, dust myself off and keep it moving.

I can still survive.

We don't need a resolution

As the new year approached and arrived, people have been asking about my resolutions. I have none. I feel as if I have been saying the same things, year after year. I have. I will continue to do so. My resolutions are more like goals for me.

I am not resolving to lose weight or workout or anything else that puts me on a timetable. Instead, my goal for this year is the same as always. I wish to continue working on being a better me, leaving negativity in the past and spreading love everywhere I am. A smile is infectious is my motto for 2011.

One thing I also wish to work on is how critical I can be of myself. "My only enemy is inside of me" I need to fix that.

Here's to wishing us all a wonderful year achieving our goals!
